On the other hand, men make up the majority of computer science and engineering majors. For women, the fields of education, English and liberal arts dominate the list. If you choose, online education gives you the opportunity to take difficult courses that won't show up on your transcript. Alternatively, you may be able to complete online credits for a grade. Online Courses - MOOCs

UChicago placement test
The best college for a student isn't necessarily the highest-ranking school in the Forbes or US News listings, but rather the college that offers their students the best career opportunities. If you remain true to your career interests, not just going after salary, your overall job earnings will increase as you gain experience. However, if your focus is more on salary alone, there's a higher risk that you'll suffer early signs of burnout, and be forced to change careers later on.

Technical training programs are a low-cost alternative to attending a regular four-year university, and you can earn good money as a highly-skilled, technical specialist. By taking some of your required degree courses online, you may be able to graduate a semester early, thus saving money on tuition. If you're currently employed, you can take online courses in your free time to advance your career. Massive Open Online Courses are known as MOOCs, utilizing interactive platforms such as Blackboard, and mobile apps. Udemy is a startup with backing from the founders of Groupon. Similarly, Khan Academy now offers free lecture videos served through YouTube. Then there's Coursera, a competing software platform, with millions of enrolled students from around the world. Finally, MIT announced that their open courseware platform (OCW) will be available at no cost.

Online Tests - Free Practice!

This section offers practice tests in several engineering subject areas. Each of the following multiple-choice tests has 10 questions to work on. No sign-up required, just straight to the test.

Admissions Process

Most colleges accept either the SAT or ACT, and have formulas for converting raw test scores. Colleges use these standardized tests because there are substantial differences in curricula, average GPA, and grade curve difficulty among US high schools. The SAT test has a separate vocabulary section while the ACT has a separate science reasoning section. On average, over half of students retaking the SAT saw improvements in their scores. Further, Advanced Placement exams are offered in a variety of physical sciences, offering you college credit for honors-level classes that you have taken while still in high school. Test yourself with practice exams online, before visiting the College Board website to register to take your actual AP Tests.

Higher education is undergoing rapid technological change, with entire institutions adopting the use of online learning methods. High school grades are the most important factor in gaining admission to the college of your choice, along with letters of recommendation. According to the admissions office, an ideal academic record consists of a high GPA in courses of progressive difficulty. About half of colleges use placement tests and a waiting list, and many community colleges have agreements with four-year universities, so that the transfer of credits is ensured.

Financial Aid Information

Government scholarships and Pell grants, combined with sports scholarships, only account for a third of total college aid. Student loans, work-study earnings, and personal savings accounts make up the remaining two-thirds. It costs nothing to use the financial aid calculator online, and see if you qualify for need-based financial aid. In fact, millions of students that would have qualified for some financial aid were late in submitting required application forms, so they missed out. The official FAFSA website is and is free to use. Many parents make mistakes when filling out the FAFSA information, including leaving some fields blank, spelling names wrong, and not entering social security numbers completely.

According to the US Department of Education, nearly 45 million Americans incurred student debt during their college career. Student loans often carry an origination fee. Origination fees are a one-time charge based on the amount of the loan. Federal Direct Student Loans are funded by the US Treasury. Alternatively, student credit cards may seem like a good short-term solution, but the interest rates are high, and credit cards often carry an annual fee. Peterson's scholarship search is good to check not only for college scholarships, but also for the extensive resources on the college application process. Local chapters of professional societies may offer academic scholarships to enable the studies of gifted students in their region or state.

College Inspector is the work of a group of Thai students in Bangkok, using info from the US Department of Education, Postsecondary Education Data System (IPEDS). For multiple-choice tests, look at the number of questions and the number of minutes you have. If there are more minutes than questions, you have over a minute for each. However, if there are more questions than minutes, you better scramble, as you have under a minute on each question. Round off all numbers you see, and look for tips in the questions that point you to the answer. Test makers like to group the real answers with confusing choices nearby, so if the first answer is a little too obvious, it's probably a decoy. Look for patterns in words in the vocabulary section, and in the math section, saving just a few seconds on each test question can lead to a much higher math score. If you're falling behind in a class, get help before the situation becomes impossible. Free tutoring may be available. Get a bulletin board for your bedroom, and post the course syllabus for each class with highlighted deadlines.
